No monastery captures the vertigo of Meteora like Holy Trinity (Agia Triada). Its slim rock tower rises in splendid isolation, and until 1925 — when 140 steps were carved into the stone — monks and visitors were hauled up in rope nets.
The monastery dates from the 15th century, with a small katholikon and a chapel hollowed into the rock itself. Its terrace offers the single best view over the town of Kalampaka and the plain of Thessaly.
Cinema fans know it as the mountain fortress scaled by Roger Moore in the 1981 James Bond film «For Your Eyes Only». The climb deters the crowds, so those who make it are rewarded with rare quiet.
