Roussanou Monastery: The Rose of Meteora

A graceful nunnery filling the entire surface of its rock, reached by small bridges and surrounded by flower gardens.

Roussanou Monastery: The Rose of Meteora

Roussanou occupies the whole flat top of a relatively low pillar, which makes it one of the most photogenic — and most accessible — monasteries of Meteora. Two small bridges lead almost directly into the courtyard.

Dedicated to Saint Barbara, the monastery was built in the 16th century and is decorated with dramatic frescoes from 1560. Today it is a convent, and the nuns keep beautiful gardens that soften the bare rock with colour.

Roussanou sits perfectly on the route between Kastraki and the higher monasteries, making it an easy and rewarding stop on any private Meteora tour.
