Halfway up the road from Litochoro to Prionia, the old Monastery of Agios Dionysios appears suddenly among the trees of the Enipeas gorge. Founded in the 16th century, it was blown up by occupying forces in 1943 and has been carefully restored in recent decades.
Visitors can walk the monastery grounds, see the historic katholikon and visit the nearby holy cave where Saint Dionysios lived as a hermit. The setting — sheer gorge walls, running water and deep forest — is unforgettable.
The monastery is an easy stop on any Prionia tour. Modest dress is required; entrance is free, and a small shop sells honey and herbs collected by the monks.
