Saint Stephen Monastery: Meteora Without the Stairs

Connected to the rock by a small bridge, Saint Stephen is the most accessible Meteora monastery — and home to a thriving community of nuns.

Saint Stephen Monastery: Meteora Without the Stairs

Unlike the other Meteora monasteries, the Holy Monastery of Saint Stephen is reached by a simple footbridge — no endless rock-cut stairs. This makes it the perfect choice for visitors with limited mobility and for families.

Inside you will find a beautifully kept courtyard with flowers, the old 15th-century katholikon, a newer church with vivid frescoes, and a museum with manuscripts and embroidery. The balcony view over the plain of Thessaly and the town of Kalampaka is among the best in Meteora.

Saint Stephen is run by nuns and keeps slightly different visiting hours than the other monasteries — another good reason to travel with a local driver who plans the route around openings and crowds.
