The great theatre of Dion was built in the Hellenistic age, in the years of Philip V, on an artificial earth embankment facing Mount Olympus. In antiquity it hosted the drama contests of the «Olympia of Dion», the festival the Macedonian kings dedicated to Olympian Zeus and the Muses.
King Archelaus made these festivals famous throughout Greece — tradition connects the court of Macedon with Euripides himself, whose tragedies were performed for the kings.
The theatre lives again every summer as a venue of the Olympus Festival, with performances under the open sky. Combining a daytime park visit with an evening performance is one of the most magical experiences our Dion tours can arrange.
