Dion Archaeological Park: The Sacred City of Zeus

At the foot of Olympus, ancient Dion was the sacred city of the Macedonians — where Alexander the Great sacrificed to Zeus before conquering the world.

Dion Archaeological Park: The Sacred City of Zeus

Dion was the most important sanctuary of the ancient Macedonians, dedicated to Olympian Zeus — its very name comes from «Dios», meaning «of Zeus». Here Alexander the Great made grand sacrifices before launching his campaign against Persia.

The archaeological park is wonderfully green, crossed by streams of Olympus water. Highlights include the Sanctuary of Isis, luxurious Roman villas with mosaics, ancient baths, the theatre, and the famous hydraulis — the oldest pipe organ ever found — displayed in the excellent museum.

Allow two to three hours for the park and museum together. Dion combines beautifully with Litochoro or the Olympus foothills for a relaxed full tour — and the flat paths make it ideal for all ages.

We offer private Dion tours from Litochoro, Leptokarya, Platamonas, Paralia Katerini, Larissa and Thessaloniki, with flexible waiting time so you explore at your own pace.
