Between Leptokarya and Skotina, on a low hill of the Olympus foothills, stood ancient Leibethra — the city of Orpheus. Here, tradition says, the great musician of myth was buried, and here the Muses of Pieria were worshipped long before the classical age.
An oracle warned that when the sun saw the bones of Orpheus, the city would be destroyed «by a boar»; the prophecy came true when the torrent Sys («boar» in ancient Greek) flooded and buried Leibethra.
Today a small archaeological park and the Leibethra Environment and Culture Centre interpret the site. It is a short, evocative stop that pairs perfectly with Old Panteleimonas or a Platamonas beach afternoon.
