On the plain of Pydna, in northern Pieria, Rome and Macedon met for the last time: on 22 June 168 BC the legions of Aemilius Paullus shattered the phalanx of King Perseus, and the kingdom of Alexander's successors came to an end in a single afternoon.
Near the modern village of Korinos, two monumental Macedonian tombs of the 4th–3rd century BC — with façades, chambers and burial couches — testify to the wealth of the region's noble families in the kingdom's golden years.
The area combines beautifully with the beaches of Korinos and Paralia Katerini: ancient history in the morning, the Thermaic gulf in the afternoon — a classic north-Pieria private tour.
